Ranging across mediums from cast bronze, clay, and painting – to procedurally generated digital animation, pigments extracted from the California landscape, and Virtual Reality; the work in conX281 provides a glimpse into the practice of 10 (X) emerging artists beginning their career in the age of destabilized realities. Despite the diverse practices through which the work emerges, these artists all grapple with what it means to make work in a time when the precarious value produced by physical labor, the new normal produced global climate change, and the orthogonal dynamics between individual and networked economic-political interests all play out across overlapping theaters of operation. The oblique connective tissue that holds the work together provides a subtle cadence between the visible features of the exhibition.
