SJSU Documentary Screening: Searching for Posada – ART and Revolutions

Date(s) - December 07, 2017
5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

In conjunction with the exhibition José Guadalupe Posada and the Mexican Penny Press on display in the Natalie & James Thompson Art Gallery through Friday December 15, 2017, there will be a special screening of a documentary about Posada and the turbulent times in which he lived. The screening will take place Thursday December 7, 2017 from 5:00pm to 6:00pm in Art Lecture Hall, Room #133.

The film Searching for Posada–ART and Revolutions is a documentary produced by the Posada Art Foundation in 2014. It reveals for the first time the amazing story of Mexico’s famed artist-printer José Guadalupe Posada and his main publisher Antonio Vanegas Arroyo. From their work over 100 years ago springs an unbelievable sphere of influence and inspiration touching and connecting events like the Mexican Revolution, artists fighting Nazis and Fascism, Lucha Libre, the Cuban Revolution, the Grateful Dead, Day of the Dead and the art of today’s social movements.

Jim Nikas, Director of the Posada Art Foundation (, will introduce the film and will also answer questions at the end of the screening. Nikas is a founder, curator, and co-owner of The Brady Nikas Collection which houses the largest private collection of works by José Guadalupe Posada and Manual Manilla in the United States. In 2014, with film Director Victor H. Mancilla, Nikas co-produced and wrote the screenplay for this documentary. The film was partially sponsored by a generous grant from the San José based Castellano Family Foundation and screened to a sold-out audience at the 2015 Sonoma International Film Festival, winning Best Documentary Short at the 2015 Jerome 89A Indie Film and Music Festival.
