Emily Van Engel: Industrial Fallout [MFA Thesis Exhibition]
Date(s) - April 22, 2019 - April 26, 2019
I started noticing that small particles of industrial fallout, or pollution, had settled on window ledges, highway underpasses, and other outside surfaces in my neighborhood. All the color in my paintings comes from these particles of pollution that I have gathered near my home in Oakland and on the San Jose State campus. The imagery in my paintings is based on commonly seen experiences, but painted with the pollution that we generally ignore. The work asks us to consider something too many of us typically ignore: how so many facets of our lives are intertwined with irreversible environmental destruction. Each image asks us to consider what we can change, what the consequences are of our current ways of being, and where we might look for solutions.
