Catalyst Quartet Acclaimed String Quartet
The Catalyst Quartet makes their triumphant return at the Hammer to wow San José with their Grammy-recognized talent.
The Sphinx Organization brought together violinists Karla Donehew-Perez and Jessie Montgomery, violist Paul Lauria, and cellist Karlos Rodriguez in 2010. Since their founding, the Catalyst Quartet has toured throughout the United States and overseas including sold-out performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and Carnegie Hall in New York City. Fans and critics alike praise the Catalyst Quartet for their rhythmic energy, polyphonic clarity, and tight ensemble-playing. And The New York Times describes their performances as “invariably energetic and finely burnished.”
For their upcoming appearance at the Hammer, the Catalyst Quartet plans to shed light on the musical culture of North America. They plan to perform the northern half of their Hemispheres Project and unearth composers from Canada, U.S., and Mexico.
“We want to emphasize the connection between these three countries in North America,” says cellist Karlos Rodriguez. “At the same time, we want the audience to realize that music is timeless. A piece can be written today, yesterday, or even a really long time ago, but it can still have the power to create an emotional connection with listeners.”
